A few weeks ago, I wrote to you about the Situation That Is May.
About the endless paperwork of school ending and an inbox that resembles an entirely unspooled ball of yarn and a calendar that is stuffed to the gills.
AND THAT WAS BEFORE UVALDE.
It just feels endless right now. The news and the input and the errands and the things I'm obviously forgetting to do.
But so much of it is still good.
I have a lovely idea for teacher gifts and lovely people to give them to, but very little time to put them together and one of them goes to one of my favorite people in the whole world who won't be teaching my kid next year. Whew bittersweet.
It's my kid's birthday on Saturday and most of his friends can come to his Super Awesome Laser Tag Party (which is miraculous during graduation season), but it's also the exact same day as the March For Our Lives event that I really want to go to because action feels like something at least.
My favorite senior is graduating (I've adopted her because the Blessed Good Lord did not bless me with a girl except for the dog), and I'm so happy for her and so excited but also just sad. I love her so much and can't wait to watch her find what's out there for her, but I also love her mom and she's sad so I'm sad. Whew.
My kids are almost done with school which feels like a relief because life has been hoppin' busy, but also WHAT. How did we get here? Do I need a summer bucket list or something? Will their eyeballs burn out of their faces from excess screen time? Will I lose the last of my threadbare sanity? These are all big questions with unclear answers.
And I guess I just take my kids out for end of school year ice cream when parents in Uvalde just like, never get to again?
I was interviewed last week about my experience with long haul Covid by one of my favorite podcasters. It was so lovely to meet her, but I cried throughout the entire interview. It's been a long, frustrating year and a half and while it was joyous and lovely to feel seen and heard, it turned me into one big walking emotion for a few days.
Conversations around gun safety and gun reform have been equally enlightening and wonderful as frustrating and disappointing, even with people close to me. This feels like the worst of politics, in what feels like the worst of times. It's hard to see a way out.
Sometimes I just go outside and stick my face close to my plants and marvel at the fact that they just GREW UP OUT OF THE GROUND LIKE MAGIC. It helps to remember that good things are still happening, whether I'm directly involved or not.
Whew bittersweet.
A weekly examination of this haphazard, excessively average and delightfully mundane life and what it means to find out that nothing at all is certain. [ muh-lod-ik ] Of, having or producing melody. A more technical meaning is "containing melody". Oof. That feels like a worthwhile aspiration.
HELLO! August went by in 2.5 seconds and that is not remotely an exaggeration. Just every year, you know? And I've become one of those cliches who repeats the same thing about time passing and years flying by and WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE. Like sometimes I'm afraid to blink. But other times I'm like, you know, kids being back in school isn't the worst thing that could happen. Lololol jk WE ARE ALL READY. It's just that time doesn't make sense. Since I last talked to you, my oldest child turned...
Hello! Happiest of days! I'm once again stuck in my analysis paralysis on what to write because there are eleventy billion things to write about and it all feels important. Therefore none of it feels like it should be the ONE thing. So then I write about nothing and the words feel like they might literally burst out of my brain and my body in a real tragic Sigourney Weaver Alien moment. WORDS EVERYWHERE. In no particular order. Some all mushed together. All chaos. A word salad of epic...
Hi there, Reader, I was interviewed about a month ago by the hosts of one of my favorite podcasts, Pantsuit Politics, about my experience with long Covid and how it has affected my friendships. At least that's what I remembered being asked about. The episode just came out last week and as I was listening, I realized that the initial question was actually "how has POLITICS affected your friendship". There were three other women that were selected to be part of the interview and while,...
